Our History
There are moments when the way humans relate to the living world feels less present in everyday life. The connection itself is not gone, but it often sits quietly beneath how daily life is organized and experienced.
A few individuals met through simple conversations and shared learning, where what was discussed slowly moved between everyday experiences and the way people understand their relationship with the living world.
What started as simple conversations continued as shared time spent thinking, learning, and doing things together in small ways.
Over time, this brought together a small group with shared interest in care, responsibility, and ways of knowing through practice, where reflections on the relationship between human life and the living world, “salus naturae and salus populi“, formed in Batam and became part of what would later become Serindit.
Serindit Philosophy Centre was established in 2023 and is legally registered as a non-profit organization in Indonesia under Registration No. AHU-0004964.AH.01.04 Year 2023.

What We Do
Serindit’s learning, research, documentation, and practice take place within the context of biodiversity conservation and small-island resilience in the Sundaland biodiversity hotspot.
Small islands present a distinct context for understanding the relationship between human life and the living world. Limited land area, ecological isolation, and ongoing environmental change shape both the opportunities and challenges of sustaining biodiversity across these landscapes. Within Sundaland, these conditions contribute to the presence of native species, unique ecological assemblages, and island ecosystems that hold significance for conservation and ecological restoration.
Serindit explores questions of biodiversity conservation and small-island resilience, with particular attention to terrestrial and coastal ecosystems, small island sanctuary, biodiversity refugia, ecological restoration, nature-based solution and the knowledge needed to understand and care for island landscapes over time.
At its heart, this work is an ongoing inquiry into how people live, learn, and act as part of the living world.
