Endangered Native Tree Planting
Serindit Philosophy Center and KPHL, in collaboration with international expatriates and students from UGM, ITB, and Unrika, held a tree-planting event in Batam’s Arboretum Forest on June 25, 2023. The initiative, supported by the Batam Tourism Promotion Board, aimed to enhance ecological health by planting rare and high-value tree species, including endangered Dipterocarpus and ulin. Indonesia Plant Red List Authority (IPRLA) SSC IUCN
Serindit Philosophy Center, in collaboration with IPRLA Species Survival Commission©IUCN, conducted a “Red List Tree Assessment” for Riau Archipelago from July 29 to 31, 2024. The workshop focused on evaluating the conservation status of 50 native tree species, propagating techniques, and strategic biodiversity protection. Into the Climate Stories : Fight for the Future #2
The Keruing Paya tree (Dipterocarpus coriaceus), valued for its durable wood and medicinal properties, is critically endangered due to deforestation and habitat destruction. In Batam, only 10 mature trees remain in protected areas. The species faces severe threats from land conversion for development and settlement. Conservation efforts by Yayasan Serindit Philosophy Centre and KPHL Batam include exploration, inventory, and replanting to help prevent its extinction.

Senayang Islands Marine Conservation
Serindit Philosophyy Centre conducted a research which focused on seagrass beds, dugongs, and hawksbill sea turtles’ nesting sites, highlighting the importance of these habitats for marine conservation. The study aims to protect these endangered species by mapping their critical areas and understanding their ecological needs. Additionally, educational programs are being implemented to high school students and kindergarteners about the significance of dugongs and sea turtles, fostering a new generation of marine conservationists.
